IMPRINT 13 Launch Party

By Romi Grossberg

Friday night saw the long-anticipated launch party at the FCC for two brilliant books: IMPRINT 13 and Ghost Cave: a novel of Sarawak, Elsie Sze's winning Saphira Prize entry. Over 80 WiPS members and guests celebrated with fine wine, exquisite food and the usual buzz of catching up with friends, old and new.

With the lovely Shannon Young as our emcee for the evening, the event kicked off with a welcome to one of the judges of the Saphira Prize, Nury Vittachi. Chairperson of Asia Pacific Writers and Translators Association, Nury introduced Elsie Sze, who with her husband had flown in from Canada for the event. Elsie graciously took the stage for a reading and later to host a signing for the many who purchased her book.

The winners of the young writers' competition followed, with Matt Steele from sponsor Dymocks presenting gift vouchers and Shannon briefly interviewing the three students.

After a break the official launch of IMPRINT 13 began with the first ever WiPS anthem, "We are WiPS!" by Guilda Kabalan and sung live beautifully by WiPS members. I can still hear the chorus...

"We are WiPS, women with voices, we are WiPS!
We are WiPS, making our choices, we are WiPS!"

Laura Cook then read her poem and Jane Houng her short tale from the new anthology. Shannon closed the event with thanks to the team who put together IMPRINT 13 for their commitment and dedication. The launch officially ended at around 9pm, but many of us stayed on until late to enjoy more wine and conversation.
