The Secret Life of Bloggers

How to blog successfully and why
By Reenita Malhotra

Three Hong Kong-based bloggers talked about their experiences of starting up blogs focusing on expat life in Hong Kong, travel through Asia and parenting.

Jennifer Brown, a former Seattle lawyer, said blogging is a great way to network, especially for a newbie in Hong Kong. She blogs about expat life, politics and travel at the blog Expat Lingo, which also features comics, parodies and book reviews. "One of the best ways to market your blog is to get added to lists and reviews like the Hong Kong Blogs Review and Open Rice," said Jen.

Ruth Ansari's blog, bluebalu, focuses on living and working in Hong Kong but also on her travels through Asia. Ruth writes about photography, hiking, travelling and more. "One of the best ways to market your blog is to cooperate with other bloggers," said Ruth. "You can do great joint promotions and generate social media engagement."

Jennifer Deayton blogs about music and motherhood at The Rock Mom and is also a regular contributor to Sassy Mama HK. She provided insight into strategic blog writing by sharing examples of her most clicked and most commented-on posts.

The presentations generated a series of lively questions from women interested in venturing into the blogosphere.

For the new blogger this was an ideal workshop. It introduced ideas to get you started using familiar blogging platforms like Wordpress and a variety of strategies to generate interesting and relevant content.

Advanced bloggers focused on increasing blog visibility or learning how to monetize blog posts, and will perhaps benefit from another event addressing issues like building audiences, creative headlines, SEO strategies and so on.
