Publish and be damned?

HOW NOT TO BE SUED FOR LIBEL

By Jennifer Eagleton

Publish and be damned? We should hope not, that is why WiPS invited lawyer, and former WiPS member, Jane Moir to come to talk to us on Monday 17th November about what you can or can't say in print or on the internet.

Jane discussed the differences between libel, slander and defamation.

Her talk was rather detailed but basically it boils down to whether what you have said affects the reputation of the person who are writing about - "hurting their feelings" (also assigning moral blame, exposure to ridicule) is insufficient for a defamation case to succeed. It also relates to what "reasonable" people would consider defamatory in the present time.

Jane has since made her clear and detailed PowerPoint presentation available to WiPS members.
