Paper, Print and
the Art of the Scalpel

Have you ever wondered how books are made? How to print that colourful, glossy effect? What's involved in making those pop-up books? Or do you simply want to know the difference between UV varnish and gloss lamination? WiPS member, Athi Prem, is a paper engineer who has worked for more than a decade in the printing industry in Hong Kong and the United Kingdom. She will share her insights about the world of books, how they are produced, life as a paper engineer and some useful tips along the way.
Athi has worked as Design Head for one of the leading printers in China and pioneered innovative products for clients worldwide. Apart from designing novelty products, books and packaging, she also oversaw the production process for clients including Marks & Spencer, American Greetings and Random House.
Last year Athi started working as an independent paper engineer, consulting and creating paper-related works for clients. She also started her own brand, Papertechnik, exclusively designing her own paper products. By combining her background in graphic design with in-depth knowledge of production, her products don't just function beautifully but are also economical to produce. Find out more about her work at
